Social Studies, with Education Concentration, B.A.


Requirements for Interdisciplinary Major in Social Studies With Secondary Education Concentration


Students interested n becoming middle and high school social studies teachers declare an interdiciplinary major in social studies and a secondary education concentration (grades 5-9/7-12).  Detailed requirements for admission to the Teacher Education Program and eligibility for certification, (i.e., background checks, Michigan Tests for Teacher Certification) are available from the Education Department.  Completion of the social studies major program of study which includes the student teaching internship (EDUC 422; EDUC 423) in order to graduate may require a ninth semester.  It is improtant that students consult with the Education Department for early advising and enroll in introductory education coursework (EDUC 195 Educational Foundations: Access, Equity and Advocacy/1 unit or EDUC 110 Exploring Teaching / .25 unit) as soon as possible.  The detailed requirements for the major with required minor are listed below.

Requirements for the Major


  • All courses for the major and minor must be taken for numerical grade.
  • This major requires completion of all other requirements for the secondary education concentration.

Prerequities*

  • ANTH 105 or SOC 101, or permission of instructor is a prerequisite for ANTH 240, 256, and 375.
  • MATH 100 is a prerequisite for E&M 101 and E&M 102.
  • PLSC 100 is a prerequistie for 300 level political science courses.

*Note - Declared social studies majors with secondary education concentrations can be recommended for waiver for these prerequisites courses with approval of the corresponding department (Anthropology & Sociology; Economics & Management; Political Science).  A teacher candiate can only declare social studies during enrollment and seccessful completion of the EDUC 196 course.

Requirements for Secondary Education Certification (13.75 units or equivalent)


Students pursuing the secondary education concentration that leads to eligibility for initial certification (grades 7-12/ 5-9 and 7-12) must choose on of these majors:  English language arts, math, science, or social studies.

  • All courses must be taken for a numerical grade, except those offered only on a credit/no credit basis.

Notes


1.  Students with an interest in education are encouraged to set up an appointment with the Education Department as soon as possible.  Students recieve an assigned Education Department advisor, in addition to their College advisor, upon enrollment in EDUC 110 or EDUC 195. 

2.  Application to the Teach Education Program (TEP) and comleted declaration of the social studies major and secondary education concentration occur during EDUC 196 with assistance of the Education Department Certification Officer and a faculty advisor. 

3.  Quantitative literacy is an imprtant skill for all eductaors; studens who have tested in MATH 100 are strongly advised to enroll in this course early in their academic progression.

4.  EDUC 397 Bundary Crossings in Secondary Schools requires extended stay/housing on campus for three additional weeks in May to complete a full-time clinical experience practicum.

5.  Application for the Student Teaching INternship is required during the fall semester, the year prior to enrollment in EDUC 422 and EDUC 432; all eligibility requirements must be successfully met prior to student teaching.

6.  Students who do not complete the TEP concentration will have a the option to change their secondary education concentration to an Educational Studie minor and to declare a differnt major (e.g. within a specific discipline - typically history; or propose an individually desgined interdisciplinary major).
