1 unit
Prerequisite: ANTH 105  , SOC 101  , or permission of instructor; junior standing recommended.
In this course students will learn about Anishinaabe culture, the archaeology of Michigan, and the colonial history of the Great Lakes with a central focus on manoomin (wild rice), a sacred plant deeply entwined with Anishinaabe history and culture. This class contributes to Albion College’s ongoing partnership with the Nottawaseppi Huron Band of the Potawatomi by applying the findings and methods of archaeology to develop academic research and public education efforts that contribute to the cultural and ecological revitalization of manoomin in Michigan.
