PSYC 265: Psychology of Mental Illness

Prerequisite: PSYC 101.
This course offers an introduction to the historical origins, perspectives, theories, methods, and empirical findings of psychopathology and clinical psychology. Throughout the semester, students will gain greater understanding of the identification and treatment of psychological disorders. Students will be encouraged to critically examine the construct of mental health and to deepen their empathy for those experiencing mental illness through lecture, case study review, class assignments, and discussion. Throughout the course, students will be exposed to the complexities of human behavior and psychological difficulties, as well as the cultural, economic, and ethical issues that arise in diagnosing and treating mental illness.
