Environmental Sustainability Practices Concentration

The Environmental Sustainability Practices concentration provides students with the tools to become environmental and social changemakers through an action-oriented, “think global, act local” philosophy. Through hands-on experiential learning supported by coursework, students will explore environmental systems, sustainability principles, and social justice, integrating these areas to better understand global environmental challenges and tackle local sustainability issues.

Requirements for Concentration in Environmental Sustainability Practices

Note: Students must be admitted to the Center for Sustainability and the Environment to pursue this concentration.

Six and One-half Units Including the Following:

Foundational Environmental Course

Choose either:

E&E 101: Fundamentals of Environmental Studies (1 Unit)
OR
E&E 102: Introduction to the Environment (1 Unit)

Experiential Courses (2.5 units)

ESP 101: Introduction to Environmental Sustainability (.5 unit) (required for first year CSE members)
ESP 318: Sustainability Projects (.5 Unit)
Experiential learning component equivalent to 1-unit of study that focuses on some aspect of sustainability or the environment. Possible experiences include for-credit internship or directed study, or a work experience, research experience, internship, or an off-campus study experience. Must be pre-approved by the CSE director or faculty director. After fulfilling the requirement, students are required to submit a reflection on their experience based on departmental guidelines.
An additional experiential course chosen from:
E&E 272: Ecology and Environmental Field Trip (.5 Unit)
ESP 260: Environmental Careers (.5 Unit)
ESP 318 : Sustainability Projects (0.5 Units) taken a second time

Environmental Elective Units

Choose three elective units. Only one of these electives may be at the 100-level, no more than two courses from a single department, and at least 2 divisions represented.
