Science Major with Education Concentration

This interdisciplinary major with secondary education concentration prepares teacher candidates to be eligible for certification in grades 7-12 or 5-9/7-12 and teach science. It addresses preparation standards for middle and high school education approved by the Michigan Department of Education.

 

Individuals interested in this concentration are welcome to contact the Education Department for advising. Due to the required number of courses, completion of this program of study may require a ninth semester. Therefore, it is important to consult with the Education Department as soon as interest is decided.

Requirements for the Major


All courses for the major and minor must be taken for a numerical grade. This major requires completion of all other requirements for the secondary education concentration.

Prerequisites


Disciplinary Emphasis / Minor in Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science, or Physics


Students choose a disciplinary minor in either biology, chemistry, earth science, or physics. Please note that the courses listed for the Interdisciplinary Coursework section of the major can be counted toward the minor. The detailed requirements for each minor are listed below.

Biology Minor (with Science Major)


Complete three units or equivalent:

Earth Science (with Science Major)


Complete five units or equivalent:

Two additional units from the list below, selected in consultation with the Earth & Environment Department


Coursework for the Secondary Education Concentration (13.75 unis or equivalent)


Students pursuing the secondary education concentration that leads to eligibility for initial certification (grades 7-12 / 5-9 and 7-12) must choose one of these majors: English language arts, math, science or social studies.
All courses for the secondary education concentration must be taken for a numerical grade.

Notes:


  1. Students with an interest in education are encouraged to set up an appointment with the Education Department as soon as possible. Students receive an assigned Education Department advisor, in addition to their College advisor, upon enrollment in EDUC 110 or EDUC 195.
  2. Application to the Teacher Education Program (TEP) and completed declaration of the science major and secondary education concentration occur during EDUC 196 with assistance of the Education Department Certification Officer and a faculty advisor.
  3. Albion College’s Science major requires completion of a disciplinary minor to ensurestudents can pursue an area of interest and gain depth of knowledge. Students are not required to seek an additional endorsement in their minor.
  4. EDUC 397 Boundary Crossings in Secondary Schools requires extended stay /housing on campus for three additional weeks in May to complete a full-time clinical experience practicum.
  5. Application for the Student Teaching Internship is required during the fall semester, the year prior to enrollment in EDUC 422 and EDUC 432; all eligibility requirements must be successfully met prior to student teaching.
  6. Students who do not complete the TEP concentration will have the option to change their secondary education concentration to an Educational Studies minor and to declare a different major (e.g. within a specific discipline; or propose an independently designed major).
