Requirements for Major in Geology

The nine-unit geology major is designed both for the student who plans to pursue graduate studies in some aspect of geology or become a professional geologist, and for the student who has
professional aspirations outside of geology.

Nine Units, Including:

Two courses at the 100-level from the following list, at least one of which must be E&E 151 or 153.

E&E 104: Earth Resources and the Environment (1 Unit)
E&E 106: Natural Disasters (1 Unit)
E&E 108: Oceans, Atmosphere and Climate (1 Unit)
E&E 151: Introduction to Geology (1 Unit)
E&E 153: Introduction to Earth History (1 Unit)
Seven units at the 200-level or higher, including:
E&E 201: Structural Geology (1 Unit)
E&E 202: Geomorphology (1 Unit)
E&E 203: Mineralogy (1 Unit)
E&E 205: Sedimentation and Stratigraphy (1 Unit)
Three other E&E courses at the 200-level or higher, at least one of which must be at the 300-level. These may not include E&E 271, E&E 272 or directed studies (one unit from E&E 375 may be counted toward this requirement).

Two Cognate Courses, Including:

CHEM 152: Principles of Chemistry (1 Unit)
And Another Chosen From:
BIOL 195: Ecology, Evolution and Biodiversity (1 Unit)
CHEM 214: Inorganic Chemistry (1 Unit)
MATH 209: An Introduction to Statistics (1 Unit)
MATH 141: Calculus of a Single Variable I (1 Unit)
MATH 143: Calculus of a Single Variable II (1 Unit)
PHYS 115: General Physics I (1 Unit)
PHYS 116: General Physics II (1 Unit)
PHYS 167: Analytical Physics I (1 Unit)

Experiential Requirements

● All geology majors are required to complete a departmentally approved independent research project, and are encouraged to complete a senior college of departmental honors thesis.

● All geology majors must satisfy a field work requirement equivalent to one-half unit of study. This requirement may be fulfilled by summer research, internship or work experiences, academic year directed studies, completion of E&E 271 or E&E 375, or other suitable field experiences approved by the faculty.

● Departmental Colloquia: All geology majors are required to attend departmental colloquia regularly. In these, students who completed research projects, service projects, internships or field experiences the previous semester will report on them, and other items of general interest, such as graduate schools and careers, will be discussed.

Notes:

● All courses for the major must be taken for a numerical grade. Students electing a geology major are encouraged to complete the cognate units as early as possible in their Albion career.

● A maximum of one geographic information systems course (E&E 133, E&E 233 or E&E 333) may be counted toward the major.

● This major may not be elected by earth science majors, or geology orenvironmental geology minors.
