Requirements for Interdisciplinary Major in Social Studies With Education Concentration


This interdisciplinary major with secondary education concentration prepares teacher candidates to be eligible for certification in grades 7-12 or 5-9/7-12 and teach social studies. It addresses preparation standards for middle and high school education approved by the Michigan Department of Education.

Individuals interested in this concentration are welcome to contact the Education Department for advising. Due to the required number of courses, completion of this program of study may require a ninth semester. Therefore, it is important to consult with the Education Department as soon as interest is decided.

Requirements for the Major


  • All courses for the major and minor must be taken for numerical grade.
  • This major requires completion of all other requirements for the secondary education concentration.

Prerequisites*

*Note - Declared social studies majors with secondary education concentrations (5-9/7-12) can be recommended for waiver for these prerequisite courses ANTH 105/MATH 100/PLSC 100 with approval of the corresponding department (Anthropology & Sociology; Economics & Management; Political Science). A teacher candiate can only declare social studies during enrollment and successful completion of the EDUC 196   course.

Notes


1.  Students with an interest in education are encouraged to set up an appointment with the Education Department as soon as possible.  Students recieve an assigned Education Department advisor, in addition to their College advisor, upon enrollment in EDUC 110 or EDUC 195. 

2.  Application to the Teach Education Program (TEP) and comleted declaration of the social studies major and secondary education concentration occur during EDUC 196 with assistance of the Education Department Certification Officer and a faculty advisor. 

3.  Quantitative literacy is an imprtant skill for all eductaors; studens who have tested in MATH 100 are strongly advised to enroll in this course early in their academic progression.

4.  EDUC 397 Boundary Crossings in Secondary Schools requires extended stay/housing on campus for three additional weeks in May to complete a full-time clinical experience practicum.

5.  Application for the Student Teaching Internship is required during the fall semester, the year prior to enrollment in EDUC 422 and EDUC 432; all eligibility requirements must be successfully met prior to student teaching.

6.  Individuals who do not complete the accompanying secondary concentration may use the courses completed toward declaring and completing an individually designed interdisciplinary major.
