Requirements for Major with Education Concentration
Ten units in English, including:
Two literature units at the 100-level
To develop textual attentiveness and an understanding of yourself as a reader and writer, including:
- One unit numbered ENGL 120 to ENGL 149 (emphasis on poetry)
- One unit of your choice numbered ENGL 120 to ENGL 186.
Two literature units at the 200-level
To build skills with reading and writing in realtion to social and historical contexts, including:
- One unit numbered ENGL 220 to ENGL 249 (emphasis on literature written before 1900)
- One unit of your choice numbered ENGL 220 to ENGL 286
Three literature units at the 300-level, including at least one course with a Literature in Practice designation (“P” suffix)
To advance your skills for engaging with literature in context, including:
- One unit numbered ENGL 320 to ENGL 359 (emphasis on literary movements and authors)
- One unit numbered ENGL 360 to ENGL 386 (advanced literature and social issues)
- One unit of your choice numbered ENGL 320 to ENGL 386
Three writing units (“W” suffix), including
- One unit of either ENGL 101W : College Writing or ENGL 102W : Honors College Writing
- One unit of ENGL 203W : Advanced Writing, College and Beyond
- One unit ofENGL 303W : English Language
Notes:
- All units used to fulfill major requirements must be taken for a numerical grade.
- Directed Study or Special Topics courses may be used to fulfill major requirements with permission of the department chair.
- Students with advanced placement in English or who place higher than ENGL 101W and ENGL 102W on Albion College’s writing placement exam can substitute a writing unit (“W” suffix) of their choice at the 100 or 200 level to fulfill the ENGL 101W or ENGL 102W requirement for the major.
- English Literature majors may substitute one 300-level literature requirement with a 300- or 400-level writing course (“W” suffix), with permission of the department chair.
- Literature in Practice courses may fulfill two requirements simultaneously (i.e. may meet the “P” requireemnt and a numerical requirement at the same time.)
- The Literature in Practice requirement may be fulfilled with the following, if taken for credit: senior thesis, student teaching (EDUC 421 , EDUC 422 , or EDUC 423 ), directed study (with permission of the department chair), or internship (with permission of the department chair).
- Movement through the major (prerequisites):
- 100-level courses typically have no prerequisites
- Students are eligible to enroll in 200-level courses after completion with a 2.0 or better of one unit numbered ENGL 120 to ENGL 189, or permission of the instructor.
- Students are eligible to enroll in 300-level courses after completion with a 2.0 or better of at least three units in ENGL, including one unit numbered ENGL 220 to ENGL 289; or permission of the instructor.
- Some courses may have different or additional prerequisites as described in the catalog.
