Requirements for Major with Professional Writing
Ten Units in English, Including:
Two foundational writing units, including
- One unit of either ENGL 101W , College Writing or ENGL 102W , Honors College Writing
- One unit of ENGL 203W , Advanced Writing, College and Beyond
Three professional writing units, including:
- One unit of either ENGL 208W , Professional Writing or ENGL 207W , Multimedia Journalism
- ENGL 204W , Pleiad Practicum II (.5 unit)
- Two units from this list:
One additional writing unit of your choice
Numbered ENGL 204W to ENGL 219W or ENGL 300W to ENGL 319W
Four literature units (without “W” suffix), including:
- Two units numbered ENGL 120 to ENGL 186
- One unit numbered ENGL 220 to ENGL 286
- One unit numbered ENGL 320 to ENGL 386, with Literature in Practice designation (“P” suffix)
Notes:
- All units used to fulfill major requirements must be taken for a numerical grade.
- Directed Study or Special Topics courses may be used to fulfill major requireemnts with permission of the department chair.
- Students with advanced placement in English or who place higher than ENGL 101W and ENGL 102W on Albion College’s writing placement exam can substitute a writing unit (“W” suffix) of their choice at the 100 or 200 level to fulfill the EGNL 101W or EGNL 102W requirement for the major.
- Pleiad Practicum courses taken for a numeric grade (ENGL 204W and ENGL 304W) may be repeated for credit towards the major, up to two total units.
- The Literature in Practice requirement may be fulfilled with the following, if taken for credit: senior thesis, student teaching (EDCU 421, 422, 423), directed study (with permission of the department chair), or internship (with permission of the department chair). English, Professional Writing majors satisfying the Literature in Practice requirement with internship creditmust still complete one literature unit at the 300-level (for a total of four literature courses).
