ARTH 329: Art of Constantinople

A survey of the art and architecture of late antiquity and Byzantium with a special focus on Constantinople, the capital of the Byzantine Empire from 330 A.D. to 1453. Covers themes including the inheritance and transformation of the classical tradition; empire-building and the urban development of Constantinople; the arts of the capital as they relate to the empire’s provinces; developments in Byzantine church architecture; and the form and function of portable religious and luxury arts. Considers the design, technique, patronage and reception of Byzantine works of both monumental and portable arts, including the meaning and significance of sacred and secular spaces in urban civic and religious ceremonials.
