HIST 242: African American History from Africa to the Civil War (1 Unit) A history of people of African descent in the United States from their African roots through the end of the Civil War. Stress on the development of slavery and racism in the colonial period; the tensions between slavery and freedom; slave culture, family and religion; race relations in the North; and the black experience in the Civil War. Readings will be drawn from slave narratives as well as historical monographs. Sacks.
