ENGL 338: Eighteenth-Century Culture Shocks (1 Unit) Prerequisite: Sophomore standing or higher or permission of instructor. An examination of the categories of race, class and gender in eighteenth-century Britain and its colonies, emphasizing writing by people of color, working-class writers, and women. Included are literary works by well-known writers (Behn, Defoe, Swift, Austen, etc.) and by less canonical ones. Extra-literary works are also considered (travel narratives, economic tracts, conduct books, etc.). Staff.
