HIST 300: Slave Societies of the Americas (1 Unit) Prerequisite: enrollment in 300-level courses requires prior completion of a 100-level history course or above and at least sophomore standing. Comparative study of the development of race-based slavery in Spanish America, Brazil, the Caribbean and the U.S. South. Discusses the Middle Passage, plantation life, slave religion, resistance, emancipation and its aftermath. Invites students to consider the history of ethnic relations within multiracial societies.
