ENGL 233: Writing Women in America 1 unit Prerequisite: Completion with a 2.0 or better of one unit numbered ENGL 120 to ENGL 189, or permission of instructor. This class will explore what women wrote and how they were written in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries in America. It will examine how male and female writers constructed gender in their respective texts, by turns reinforcing and disrupting the gendered expectations of early America. Topics will include the role of emotion and reason, the intersections of race and gender, and economic and political work of the imagination. Roberts
