EDUC 303: Teaching for Understanding in a Diverse World: Theory, Models and Policy in the Pedagogy of English as a Second Language (1 Unit) Prerequisites: EDUC 195 or EDUC 202 and permission of department. Supports students with a minor in teaching English as a second language. This course introduces students to the field of Second Language Acquisition (SLA) and its connection with English language learning in the classroom context. Theories, pedagogical models and policy regarding second language acquisition are examined carefully and critically. A wide range of cultural, linguistic, psychological, and social processes that are at the basis of language learning and acquisition, and current research findings in the field of SLA will be discussed in terms of professional practice and English learners’ needs.
