The study of western and non-western musical language beyond music fundamentals.  By developing an understanding of tonal and non-tonal musical language through melodic structure, chromatic chord structures, embellishment patterns, tonal progressions, counterpoint, part-writing, composition, sight-singing, and dictation activities, students will be able to hear, sing, improvise, and compose tonal and non-tonal progressions. Furthermore, students will begin to experience chromatic harmonic tendencies, modes and other scale structures, as well as engage with cross-historical references to a diversity of musical genres in their listening, singing, and writing activities.
