ENGL 376: Shakespeare II (1 Unit) Prerequisite: Sophomore standing or higher or permission of instructor. A study of Shakespeare’s plays after 1600, with special attention to the major tragedies: Hamlet, Othello, King Lear, Macbeth, and Antony and Cleopatra. The plays are examined individually, but attention is also given to social and political contexts. Major attention is given to the representation of gender in the plays, and other topics include the history of critical response, the variety of theoretical approaches currently available, and the many uses to which the plays have been put. (ENGL 375 is not a prerequisite.) Same as THEA 376 . MacInnes.
