(1 Unit)
Prerequisite: Sophomore standing or higher or permission of instructor.
An examination of two of the most important and decidedly different poets ever to have lived and written in the United States. Considers Whitman and Dickinson in relation to one another and within a number of contexts that shaped the composition and reception of their work—nineteenth-century poetry and poetics, the American Civil War, the expanding and evolving print culture, and the early and late twentieth-century conceptions of nineteenth-century American poetry.
