ENGL 285: LGBTQ Literature

Examines LGBTQ literature written in Great Britain and America from the Renaissance to the present, including works by such writers as Shakespeare, Whitman, A. Lowell, Woolf, Forster, Baldwin, Obejas, Lorde, Becker, Winterson, and Cunningham.  Considers such questions as: What makes a text ‘gay’?  To what extent does the cultural oppression of LGBTQ lives shape the literary texts they produce?  To what extent do these works affect literary genres, form a literary tradition, and influence existing traditions?
